Orthopedic Surgical Instruments – A must for Surgeons

Surgeries are often the most dreaded and paradoxically also life saving procedures that help a person get back to a normal healthy living. In the case of orthopedic surgeries, it is primarily done to restore the function of the skeletal system. For performing these surgeries the surgeons need specially designed tools that have specific functions and are used for general use and for specific use. These tools basically provide assistance to the surgeons for the step by step systematic and proper handling of the surgery.

As technology progresses and medical innovations are carried out almost on a daily basis these tools have become more and more sophisticated and specific giving improved results.

Orthopedic surgeries can include a hip replacement surgery or hand surgery to release tendons for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The range of skills required in the process of an orthopedic surgery and the instruments needed to accomplish this task can be very wide. Surgeons require very specific instruments for various kinds of surgeries which can include power drills to delicate micro-surgical instruments in another.

The different types of orthopedic surgical instruments include:

Bone Instruments: Bones are one of the hardest parts of our body and fixing and cutting through them is not a very easy job. The instruments required for making these cuts are generally powered tools. Some are used by the hands like the straight hand saw which also includes the hack saw and the saber saw. In the more specialized surgeries like the knee surgery where more accurate and measurable cuts are required the “gigli” saw is used which is like a cable made of sharp strands of wire.

The asternal saw is a reciprocating bone cutter which has a powered rotary oscillation that provides smooth controllable cuts and is mostly used for cutting the ribs or the skull.

A Cosotome is a powerful rib cutter which has two levers, the first one grasping the rib and the second cutting through the ribs. It is used to pertain access to the thoracic activity.

In back surgery “rongeurs” are used to cut the small bone.

For most bone surgeries you require automatic drills to instill pins, screws and plates. Pliers, screw drivers and mallets are the hand tools used in most of the surgeries for skimming bone of the surface.

Tissue Instruments: For constructing the broken tissues a number of new instruments have entered the market. However, the basic instruments like the scissors, clamps, and retractors. Each one has its role. The scissors ofcourse is used for cutting, the clamps for stopping the blood vessels from bleeding and the retractors does the work of holding back the tissues so that the surgeons can operate freely.

Prosthesis: This is one of the most regular type of orthopedic surgery being done. Several types of instruments are required to perform this surgery. It includes chisels, glue, power tools, reamers, and calipers. All these instruments have different roles to help in replacing the bone with an artificial one.

Surgical instruments play a crucial role in the rate of success of the surgery. The material that gets used in making of these instruments helps in improving the sustainability and results of the surgery.
